While numerous visual artworks delve into the realm of optical illusions, auditory illusions remain less explored. The "INFINITE SWEEP SYNTHESIZER," henceforth referred to as "INFINITE SWEEP," offers an innovative approach to experiencing the "Infinite Continuous Scale," a notable auditory illusion, while facilitating the creation of diverse sounds. This application is particularly suited for various activities, including live music, recordings, and meditation.

What is the "Infinite Continuous Scale"?

The range of frequencies perceivable by humans spans approximately 20Hz to 20,000Hz (20kHz). Interestingly, a sound at double the frequency is recognized as an octave higher. For instance, a sound at 440Hz (A) becomes 880Hz, which is perceived as "1 octave higher sound (A)." This phenomenon led to the discovery of the Infinite Continuous Scale by US cognitive scientist Dr. Roger Shepard, who identified it as an “acoustic illusion” based on these properties. The term "Shepard tone" was subsequently coined to describe this concept.

Various researchers and artists have since explored adaptations of the Infinite Continuous Scale; however, these typically required specialized studio environments and equipment.

• Speed Volume: Adjust the rate at which the infinite scale shifts; slower settings provide a more controlled experience over 20 to 30 seconds.
• Step Volume: In addition to smooth continuous pitch changes, return to a stair-step progression by manipulating this feature, enabling exploration of unconventional scales.
• UP / DOWN Button: Seamlessly toggle between ascending and descending infinite scales.
• Accelerometer Mode: Activate this mode to control speed through device movement; tilting adjusts speed upward or downward for versatile performance applications.

Pursuit of Infinite Continuous Scale

For those well-versed in synthesizers, "INFINITE SWEEP" permits intricate sound design, employing 32 oscillators: a main oscillator group (16 oscillators) functioning as the "main sweep generator" and an additional group operating in reverse (16 oscillators).
